Cannabinoids are very interesting compounds that interact specifically with cannabinoid receptors in the brain. They can be separated into three distinct categories depending on where they originated.
Endocannabinoids occur naturally in the body. Synthetic cannabinoids are produced artificially in laboratories. The final category is phytocannabinoids, which are produced by plants.
The most well-known plant to produce phytocannabinoids is the cannabis plant.
There have been at least 113 unique cannabinoids discovered in the cannabis plant.
Many people are familiar with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is mostly responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with smoking marijuana.
But there are other cannabinoids that have far greater benefits for the mind and the body without any psychoactive compounds. One, in particular, that is widely studied is cannabidiol (CBD). A second and slightly less popular is cannabinol (CBN).
CBD is quickly becoming one of the biggest natural sensations of the 21st century. Studies have discovered that it can help fight cancer, build muscles, lose weight, relieve pain, and so much more. Experts have also begun to wonder if CBD could help patients kick bad habits, such as smoking.
A few studies have been aimed at determining just that. But before diving into those, let’s consider exactly what CBD is and how it interacts with the body.
An Introduction To CBD
Discovered during the 1940’s, experts first believed CBD to have no pharmaceutical use. That opinion has obviously changed over the years.
It has even been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a prescription drug used to treat epilepsy.
But what exactly is happening when a person consumes CBD?
In most cases, cannabinoids interact with the body by binding to receptors in the endocannabinoid receptors. The two primary receptors are the CB1 and CB2 receptor.
CBD is different in that it does not always bind with these receptors but actually blocks them from receiving certain signals. It also blocks a few other receptors in the body, such as the GPR55, GPR2, GPR6, and GPR12 receptors, which are not cannabinoid receptors but are very closely linked.
At the same time, CBD works as an agonist to serotonin receptors. An agonist is a chemical that binds to a receptor and activates it.
Without diving into the science behind all of these receptors, the simple outcome is that CBD can work as an antidepressant, anxiolytic, neuroprotector, and pain reliever.
That is in addition to the many other benefits that have been discovered through careful studies and numerous trials.
As experts began to learn more and more about this chemical and its possibilities companies began to capitalize on the idea and begin integrating into their products.

Where Does CBD Come From?
Hemp and marijuana are two plants in the cannabis family. Marijuana is illegal in most states because it contains high concentrations of the psychoactive chemical THC.
Hemp, on the other hand, is legal in most states when grown for specific reasons and it contains between 0 and 0.3 percent THC.
A person could certainly attempt to smoke hemp, but there would be no psychoactive effects. And it would be a waste because hemp has many great uses, such as making fabrics, ropes, and cultivating CBD.
CBD is extracted from hemp plants that are specifically bred to have very little THC and a lot of CBD. This hemp is often grown industrially in one of the fourteen states that allow it. The CBD is extracted using a C02 extraction process or an ethanol extraction process.

Now that you understand what CBD is and where it comes from you can move to the big questions. One of the most recent questions to gain a lot of attention is whether or not CBD can help a person quit smoking.
Surprisingly, it seems as though it can.
Can CBD Help You Quit Smoking?
In the past, CBD has been studied for its ability to reduce pain, fight cancer, and boost energy levels. It wasn’t until 2013 that a group of researchers published a study focused on the extract’s ability to reduce nicotine cravings.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University College of London and the findings were published in the “Addictive Behaviors” journal.
The study involved 24 participants and lasted for a total of one week. Each of the participants was given an inhaler. Some of the inhalers contained CBD while others only contained a placebo. They were then told that each time they had an urge to smoke that they should take a puff from the inhaler.
They were not told that they should reduce their smoking habits or stop smoking. Just that they should use the inhaler first.
The results of the study were more impressive than the researchers had imagined. The group with the placebo inhalers continued to smoke as many cigarettes as they had before.
The group with the CBD inhalers reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked by forty percent in some cases. Furthermore, this reduction in smoking continued past the end of the one week study.
This clearly indicated that CBD was having a strange impact on the body’s addiction to nicotine. Unfortunately, exactly how it was impacting the body and reducing these cravings is still unknown.
More studies will need to be conducted before we can fully understand how this phenomenon works. For now, we can at least have some comfort in knowing that CBD can be used to help a person quit smoking.
